The short answer is that there isn’t any laminate flooring on the market that’s totally scratch proof. It’s just a fact that any flooring material, from natural wood to engineered timber or hybrid flooring, can be damaged. However, there are a few factors that will determine how resistant your laminate is to damage.
The answer is both yes and no. Laminate flooring that’s 8mm with a medium density fibre (MDF) core is used by a lot of big retail stores and builders that work on big-volume projects. It’s essentially a mass-market product and is popular.
Laminate flooring is comprised of multiple layers: backing, substrate, pattern, and wear. The wear layer is a clear coating that sits over the printed and embossed wood-pattern layer. Under this is the core, which is made from a sustainably produced high density fibreboard which absorbs excess noise from footfall.
One major benefit of laminate is it is low maintenance. With solid timber, you know every few years there will be several days of treatments and curing time to keep it looking its best. Laminate flooring is set and forget; a spray mop every few days is enough to keep it looking amazing.
